Concept

"Gold Sentence" is a "here and now" project. This project started from the end of 2002 and from the technical experiment. Base on this experiment, I realize that the "extension of the technical to the concept". After the protest, SARS and many political news happened within a few months, people Hong Kong was going crazy and angry with the government. One of the "angry" point is our governement had never responsed us even we have a "great" protest. We need, and of course should be, a immediate response to our request. Instead of waiting the response, why don't we have a immediate response when we speak out our request? So, I made a sound checking system and make fun of this. When there is people making sound, noice or whatever, some political images, sounds and videos will come out. Just like responding our request immediatly. Then we don't need to wait for a long time for the response from our great government, we get extremly quick response!

Technical Part and System Flow

"Gold Sentence" is a get sound level system. When the audience make some sound or there are some sound near the installation, the sound will input into the computer through the microphone which is handing from the ceiling.
The microphone is the important input device for this system.
The program is made in Director Lingo. The program will keep checking the sound level input from the microphone, some images, videos or sounds will "expose" when the sound level meet a certain point of sound level.

There is a computer room hidden and next to the installation, the VGA cable to projector and microphone are extented from this room. And the microphone is hanging on the ceiling. The distance of the projection from the screen is 4m and that the width of the projection is around 2m. I set the sensitive to the much low level since the area there is noicy and not suitable for high sensitive sound detection or the image will go crazy if the sensitive is too high. So I need to modified the program (the detection part) on site to adjust the level of sensitive.

Not like the Art Center, sd Gallery has no hidden computer room. There is a white wall just next to the installation, so I put the computer behide that white wall and use a white curtain wrap up the "entry" of the wall. (photo) Just like the setup in New Media Master Show, I hang the microphone on the ceiling. This time I set the sensitve to the higher level than the setup in Art Center since the enviorment here is quiet, we can not set it into lower sensitive or the image will keep freeze. So I need to modified the program (the detection part) on site to adjust the level of sensitive. The distance of the projector is also 4m away from the screen and the width of the screen is about 2m.
