Works' Descriptions & Artists' Biographies
Spacing is essential in writing. Meanings cannot be expressed efficiently if
there is no space between words. Punctuation marks and capital letters
function quite similarly: without them, the structure of a piece of writing
cannot be formed.
By typing to find out the secret codes behind the three stories
chosen for the work, the user will become aware of the importance
of space, punctuation and capitalization in writing, since those
spaces, punctuation marks and capital letters will delete themselves
once the user types them out.
Vivi Bong is a Year 2 student in Intermedia (Associate of Arts in
Media Technology) at the School of Creative Media, the City University
of Hong Kong. The Secret Story is her first published digital media work.
黃飛飛現為香港城市大學創意媒體學院媒體科技副文學士的二年級生,主修誇媒體。《故事密碼》是她的第一個媒體藝術作品。
A Book Without E - Monica Y.T. CHAN
If you are only allowed to use 25 English alphabets to write, which alphabet will you give up? The French Oulipo Group wrote in one of their books without "e." This work extends the rule to all the five vowels: not only can the user choose to omit any vowel to write in this work, she can also produce texts by moving the mouse.
《無e書》 - 陳婉婷
如果只能用25個英文字母去寫一本書,你會選擇捨棄哪個英文字母?法國的 Oulipo 文學組織就試過不用 E 字去寫書。作品由 E 字延伸至所有元音字母:玩者可以放棄運用任何一個元音字母來寫作,亦可以移動滑鼠來衍生出更多的文章。
Monica Y.T. CHAN is a Year 3 Student from the School of Creative
Media, the City University of Hong Kong. Monica is interested in
multi-media production and sound art, her video works See Through and Untitled
(A Tableau
shot in corridor) were shown in the “Micro Narratives: Invented Time & Space” (2006) exhibition.
陳婉婷為香港城市大學創意媒體學院的三年級學生,喜歡從事多媒體及聲音藝術的創作。她的錄像作品《望穿》及《無題 (在走廊的一個定鏡場面)》曾於「微敍事:此(那)時、那(此)地」(2006) 展覽中展出。
Virtual Canary - Carrie Y. Chow 周翌
The work is divided into 11 layers, each of which presents a different text. The user can roll over the interface with a mouse to mix and remix those layers into a complete page. The combination of the layers will come out differently every time the user rolls over the interface. Therefore, the variations within a page are almost infinite. The diverse font styles of the 11 layers of text are displayed simultaneously, forming a unique visual performance of words.
作品共有 11 個分層,每個分層上都盛載著不同的文字。你須以滑鼠在介面上移動來把不同的分層混合成一個版面。由於每次的滑鼠移動都會構成不同的分層組合,所以版面的變化幾乎是無限的。那 11 個分層的不同字體款式亦被同時展示出來,成為作品的純視覺表演。
Carrie Y. Chow is studying in the School of Creative Media (majoring in Critical Intermedia Laboratory), City University of Hong Kong. She is particularly interested in film and video production. Her video works have been shown in the "Berlinale Talent Campus" and the "RomeFilmFest 2006."
周翌就讀於香港城市大學創意媒體學院,主修批判性跨媒體實驗室。周翌喜歡電影及錄像創作,於 2006 年應邀出席「第四屆柏林國際電影節」交流活動,其錄像作品並於「羅馬電影節 2006」中展出。
Once the program is started, 3 flowers will appear and automatically generate
themselves into one of the two "states" below:
1. …a green living flower that grows into 3 other flowers and 1 sentence
when you click on it
2. …a grey dead flower, which will disappear when you click on it.
The sentences appearing in this work are taken from 3 Rengas (a form of Japanese collaborative poetry), namely Pleated, Oriental, Growth Waits for its Moment, and What Light Brings, which can be found on http://renga-platform.co.uk. With this computed way of Renga generation, more combination possibilities of reading a Renga can be created for the reader to experience the varied rhythms and sentence arrangements every time s/he plays the program.
《花語》 - 龔曉彤
打開作品,三朵花便會在屏幕上出現,並自動產生出以下兩種形態的其中一種:
1. 綠色的活著的花:按它,它會長出另外的三朵花和一句句子。
2. 灰色的死了的花:按它,它會逐漸消失。
在作品中出現的句子都是從 http://renga-platform.co.uk 取下的日本「連歌」詩句(包括 Pleated, Oriental、Growth Waits for its Moment、和 What Light Brings)。透過電腦程式的自動衍生法,連歌詩句的組合可能性變得更為靈活,讀者可以從每一次的遊戲過程中閱讀到多樣的詩句排列和節奏。
H.T. KUNG is a media art student from the School of Creative Media,
a major of the Critical Intermedia Laboratory, the City University

Reading the Three-Character Classic - June H.L. LAU
Traditional Chinese writing goes from the top to the bottom, and from the right to the left. However, the direction of reading has now become left to right. Is it necessary for us to follow only one standard path of reading? This work suggests ways to read the Chinese traditional "Three Character Classic" in different directions, via the magic of computer programming.
《閱讀三字經》 - 劉凱琳
中國傳統文章是由上而下,右至左書寫成的,而我們現在的閱讀習慣卻是由左至右。究竟閱讀路線是否有一既定的標準?此作品嘗試以電腦程式製造出不同的閱讀軌道,讓我們不再循規蹈矩地學習《三字經》。
numeral‧calculator - June H.L. LAU
Although Chinese numerals have existed for thousands years, their usage has been very limited in our modern world. Testing the player's knowledge of traditional Chinese numerals, this work adopts a sudoku-like 4 x 4 grid format where the player has to calculate and change the numbers to make every row and column into a sum of 20.
《數字‧計算機》- 劉凱琳
雖然中國數目字已經存在了好幾千年,但它們在現代社會中的用途卻非常有限。作品考驗了玩者對傳統中國數目字的認識:玩者需於一個 4
x 4 的方格版面上進行運算、改動數字,令每行的數字總和都等於 20。
June H.L. LAU is
a student from the School of Creative Media, a major in the Critical Intermedia
Laboratory, the City University of Hong
Kong. June likes travelling, reading and watching movies. She is
also interested in creating artworks via computer programming.
